MLB: Atlanta 4, N.Y. Mets 2 (1st game)

ATLANTA, April 16 (UPI) -- Alex Gonzalez socked a pair of solo homers Saturday and the Atlanta Braves downed the New York Mets 4-2 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Gonzalez went deep in the second and fourth innings, providing the Braves a 3-0 advantage.

Chipper Jones and Freddie Freeman also contributed solo shots for Atlanta, which broke a two-game losing streak and improved to 6-8 on the young season.

Derek Lowe (2-2) earned the victory with a solid six innings, holding the Mets to two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four.

Eric O'Flaherty, Scott Linebrink and Jonny Venters combined for two frames of scoreless relief and Craig Kimbrel notched his fourth save in the ninth for the Braves.

New York starter D.J. Carrasco (0-1) lasted only 3 2/3 innings, yielding three runs on four hits.

Jose Reyes and Willie Harris drove in the Mets' runs.
