MLB: Tampa Bay 4, Minnesota 3 (10 innings)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 14 (UPI) -- Johnny Damon's two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning Thursday rallied the Tampa Bay Rays to a 4-3 victory over Minnesota.

Sam Fuld singled off Matt Capps (0-1) with one out and Damon followed by lining a shot to left that barely cleared the wall and gave the Rays a comeback win in the first of a four-game series against Minnesota.

The dramatics came after the Twins had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th on Danny Valencia's RBI single off winning pitcher Kyle Farnsworth (1-0).

The Rays also staged a last-chance rally in the bottom of the ninth, when Matt Joyce stroked a two-run double off Twins closer Joe Nathan to erase a 2-0 deficit and force an extra frame.

Rays starter James Shields yielded two runs on nine hits over seven innings, walking two and striking out four.

Carl Pavano ended with a hard-luck no-decision after tossing eight shutout innings for Minnesota, surrendering only four hits, walking two and striking out seven.

Valencia went 3-for-4 for the Twins.
