The closest Washington came to scoring was in the third inning when Danny Espinosa doubled and went to third on an out but was thrown out at home when trying to score on pitcher Jordan Zimmerman's grounder.

Carlos Ruiz socked a solo homer among his two hits for the Phillies.

Zimmerman (1-2) yielded four runs (one earned) on five hits over seven innings for the Nationals, who fell to 5-7.
