Santana, however, gave up singles to John McDonald and Jose Bautista in the sixth and Adam Lind brought them both home with a two-out double.

It remained a 2-2 contest until Nix hit his homer to left off Santana (0-1), who gave up six hits and struck out seven over eight innings.

Octavio Dotel (1-0) struck out two in a perfect seventh inning to get the win. Jon Rauch worked the ninth for his second save. Rauch gave up a two-out single to Hank Conger, but struck out Peter Bourjos to end the game.
