MARBELLA, Spain, April 5 (UPI) -- No. 2-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova needed a third set Tuesday to earn a second-round berth at the Andalucia Tennis Event in Spain.
Kuznetsova overcame five service breaks in a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory over Mona Barthel. The match took more than 2 1/2 hours and was only decided when Kuznetsova was able to cash in all three of her break-point chances in the third set.
Third-seeded Aravane Rezai was bounced 6-3, 6-0 by Estrella Cabeza Candela, the world No. 258th ranked player. Cabeza Candela fought off seven break points en route to the second-set shutout.
Tsvetana Pironkova, at No. 5 the only other seeded player on Tuesday's schedule, advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 romp over Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor. Pironkova won 60 percent of the points in the match despite dropping serve twice.
Other results Tuesday saw Dinara Safina defeat Arantxa Rus 3-6, 6-2, 6-4; Kristina Barrios top Kirsten Flipkens 6-3, 7-5; and Lourdes Dominguez Lino get past Angelique Kerber 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Also, Agnes Szavay needed less than an hour to oust Johanna Larsson 6-1, 6-1; while qualifiers Irina-Camelia Begu, who beat Alberta Brianti, 6-4, 6-1, and Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino, who took out Monica Niculescu, 7-5, 6-4, moved to the second round.
