NHL: Vancouver 3, Los Angeles 1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, April 1 (UPI) -- Roberto Luongo allowed only a first-period goal and Thursday and the Vancouver Canucks clinched the best record in the NHL with a 3-1 victory over Los Angeles.

The Canucks wrapped up the first Presidents' Trophy in franchise history and will have home-ice advantage throughout the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Vancouver will go into the playoffs with its fifth division title in seven years and its first conference championship in 17 seasons.

Luongo gave up a goal to Kyle Clifford with 6:51 to go in the first period and then had to make just 18 saves while the Canucks were rallying to their fifth straight victory.

Daniel Sedin tied it with 4:54 left in the second period and Christian Ehrhoff scored with a second remaining in the stanza to put Vancouver in front.

Ryan Kesler added an insurance goal on the power play with 4:26 to go in the third period. It was the 41st goal of the season for Sedin and the 37th for Kesler, both of whom are among the top four goal scorers in the NHL this year.

Los Angeles, which had won its previous four games, remained a point behind Phoenix for fourth place in the Western Conference. Nashville moved into a tie for fifth with Los Angeles earlier in the evening, but the Kings have a game in hand on the Predators.

Jonathan Quick stopped 32 shots for Los Angeles.
