NHL: Phoenix 2, Dallas 1 (SO)

GLENDALE, Ariz., March 30 (UPI) -- Ray Whitney's goal in the fifth round of the shootout Tuesday gave the Phoenix Coyotes a 2-1 victory over Dallas.

Whitney's shot slithered into the net after Dallas goalie Kari Lehtonen snagged the puck with his leg pads but was unable to control it.

The win was the eighth in the last 10 games for the Coyotes, who are one point ahead of the Kings in the race for the fourth playoff berth in the Western Conference.

David Schlemko accounted for the only Phoenix goal in regulation. Ilya Bryzgalov turned in 44 saves and allowed only one goal in the shootout.

Jamie Benn scored a power-play goal for Dallas with 2:26 left in the second period to tie the contest 1-1.

The game featured only three penalties -- none in the third period or overtime.
