Bonds's ex-mistress tells of alleged abuse

SAN FRANCISCO, D.C., March 28 (UPI) -- Barry Bonds's former girlfriend testified Monday he verbally and physically abused her after he began taking steroids in 2000.

Kimberly Bell appeared in a San Francisco courtroom where the former Giants home-run slugger is facing trial for allegedly lying to a grand jury in 2003 when he testified he did not knowingly take steroids.

A tearful Bell told the jury Bonds threatened to cut off her head, cut out her breast implants and burn her house when he could not reach her by telephone, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Bell was involved with Bonds for nine years.

She testified Bonds told her he was using steroids sometime in 1999 to 2000, and after he began taking the drugs, he became aggressive, impatient and abusive. Bell also said Bonds's testicles shrank and he became unable to perform sexually.

A star witness, Bell attracted many spectators and the courtroom was full before the trial even started, the Times reported. An overflow room was crowded when Bell took the stand.
