Mattek-Sands, Lepchenko advance in Miami

MIAMI, March 23 (UPI) -- Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Varvara Lepchenko were among the American victors Wednesday in first-round action of the Sony Ericsson Open.

Mattek-Sands advanced to face world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Swede Sofia Arvidsson Wednesday on the hard courts of the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Miami.

Lepchenko moved to the second round with a 6-2, 6-3 win over fellow American Coco Vandeweghe.

A third U.S. victory was turned in by qualifier Jamie Hampton, who defeated Croatian wild card Ajla Tomljanovic 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Also moving ahead on Monday were 40-year-old Japanese veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm, as well as Spaniard Anabel Medina Garrigues, Peng Shuai of China, South African Chanelle Scheepers and Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan.
