NHL: Carolina 3, N.Y. Islanders 2 (OT)

RALEIGH, N.C., March 18 (UPI) -- Joni Pitkanen scored with 1:02 remaining in overtime Friday to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders.

Pitkanen took a pass from Jeff Skinner and fired a slap shot over the glove of Al Montoya.

The Hurricanes faced a 2-1 deficit heading into the third period but Erik Cole tied it with 4:37 to play in regulation with his 20th goal of the season.

Skinner opened the scoring for Carolina late in the first period but the Islanders came back to take the lead on goals from Frans Nielsen and Michael Grabner.

Carolina won for the second time in seven games and moved into a tie with Buffalo for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Cam Ward got the win with 35 saves.

Montoya stopped 32 shots in New York's third straight loss.
