FRESNO, Calif., March 18 (UPI) -- Steve Cleveland has resigned his position as head coach of the men's basketball team at Fresno State, the school said Friday.

Cleveland coached the Bulldogs for six seasons, building a 92-98 record. Fresno State was 14-17 this past season.

He took over a program coming off NCAA investigations that uncovered two major rules violations poor academic progress. The school has advanced to the point that academic scores have steadily increased and NCAA sanctions and probation have been lifted.

"I am very grateful for Steve's years of service to Fresno State as well as his extraordinary commitment to the restoration of integrity and academic achievement to the men's basketball program," said Fresno State Athletic Director Thomas Boeh.

"His efforts have clearly led to the positive transformation of the team's internal culture and provided a stable foundation on which we can build the program."

Cleveland has two years left on his contract and is expected to take another position in the athletic department.
