COL BKB: Temple 66, Penn State 64

TUCSON, March 17 (UPI) -- Juan Fernandez's 15-footer in the final second Thursday gave the Temple Owls a 66-64 NCAA tournament second-round win over Penn State.

Temple (25-7) moves into the third round against West Region No. 2-seeded San Diego State (33-2), which dispatched No. 17 Northern Colorado 68-50 later Thursday.

The game was tight throughout with a 17-point first-half effort from Fernandez and a late 3-point play by Rahlir Jefferson giving Temple a 35-33 lead at the half. Neither team led by more than four in the second half.

Fernandez had put Temple up 64-61 by hitting two free throws with 28 seconds left. Penn State (19-15), however, tied the score with a very long 3-point shot off the left angle by Talor Battle.

Temple called time out with 11 seconds left. Fernandez moved with the ball on the right side but couldn't shake the Penn State defense. He finally forced up a shot, leaning around the Nittany Lions' Tim Frazier, with the ball going through with 0.4 seconds showing. It was too little time for Penn State to get a good shot.

Fernandez and Ramone Moore each had 23 points for the Owls. That was matched by Battle, who led Penn State with 23.
