ST. LOUIS, March 16 (UPI) -- One-time National League MVP Marty Marion, who played shortstop on three World Series-winners for the St. Louis Cardinals, has died at age 93.
The team said the seven-time all-star, nicknamed "The Octopus" for his tall, slender build, died of natural causes Tuesday night.
Marion played 11 of his 13 big-league seasons for St. Louis (1940-1950), winning NL most-valuable honors in 1944. With Marion at shortstop, the Cards won pennants in 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1946, going on to win the Series each year except in '43.
He managed the Cards in 1951 before moving on to the St. Louis Browns as a player-manager from 1952-53 and then managed the Chicago White Sox from 1954-56.
