NEWARK, N.J., March 12 (UPI) -- Anssi Salmela scored 3:09 into overtime Saturday, handing the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 decision over the New York Islanders.
The defenseman got the game-winner on his first goal of the season and the surging Devils won for the 22nd time in 27 games to stay in the hunt for an Eastern Conference playoff spot.

Former first-round draft choice Jacob Josefson got his first career NHL goal and David Clarkson also scored for New Jersey, which pulled to .500 at 32-32-4.
Martin Brodeur stopped 13-of-15 shots to earn the victory.
Blake Comeau and John Tavares scored second-period goals, and Al Montoya made 32 saves for the Islanders.
