Clijsters, Zvonareva win at Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 11 (UPI) -- Kim Clijsters and Vera Zvonareva, the tournament's second and third-seeded players, reached the third round Friday at the BNP Paribas Open.

Seeded players competed in the event for the first time, having enjoyed a bye past the opening round.

Clijsters advanced with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Alla Kudryavtseva and Zvonareva defeated Timea Bacsinszky 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone also moved on with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Zuzana Ondraskova, who won her first match in six tries this year when she made it past the first round.

Jelena Jankovic, seeded sixth, advanced to the third round by downing Coco Vandeweghe 6-2, 6-1. Jankovic has reached the semifinals in three straight tournaments, but did not win any of them.

The highest seed to fall Friday was No. 12 Petra Kvitova, who lost to Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.

Among other winners were Alize Cornet, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Yanina Wickmayer, Marion Bartoli and Sara Errani.

Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki will play her first match Saturday against 17-year-old American Sloane Stephens.
