NHL: Los Angeles 2, Detroit 1

DETROIT, March 9 (UPI) -- Jonathan Quick shut down Detroit after the opening period and made 28 saves Wednesday, lifting the Los Angeles Kings to a 2-1 victory over Detroit.

It was the Red Wings' fourth straight loss, their longest such streak of the season.

The Kings began the evening tied for eighth in the Western Conference with Minnesota and climbed out of that tie with their second win in five games.

Quick gave up a goal to Darren Helm 5:57 into the contest but Los Angeles caught up and went ahead on scores from Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown in the second period.

Detroit came into the game with the third-most goals in the NHL but, for the third time in four games, managed only one score. Jimmy Howard made 24 saves for the Red Wings.
