Edwards holds off Stewart in Vegas win

LAS VEGAS, March 6 (UPI) -- Carl Edwards took the lead late in the race and outgunned Tony Stewart down the stretch Sunday to win the Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

A series of green-flag pit stops in the late going provided an opportunity for Edwards, who bounced back from a disappointing finish at Phoenix to collect his second win at Las Vegas and 19th of his Sprint Cup career.

Edwards, who was among the favorites at Phoenix but wrecked early, easily fended off Stewart, who dominated most of the race but had to settle for second place after a two-tire gamble down the stretch cost him.

Juan Pablo Montoya came in third, Marcos Ambrose finished fourth and Ryan Newman -- Stewart's teammate -- rounded out the Top 5.
