NHL: Calgary 4, Columbus 3

CALGARY, Alberta, March 5 (UPI) -- Rene Bourque and Curtis Glencross broke open a close game with second-period power-play goals Friday, sending the Calgary Flames to a 4-3 win over Columbus.

The goals came 81 seconds apart and turned a 2-2 tie into a 4-2 Calgary advantage that they protected thanks to 37 saves from Miikka Kiprusoff.

Calgary began the night in eighth place in the volatile Western Conference playoff game and the win vaulted the Flames all the way to fifth.

The first two Calgary goals were scored in a span of 44 seconds of the first period by Olli Jokinen and Jarome Iginla to give the Flames a 2-1 lead.

Antoine Vermette tied it 1:53 into the second before Bourque and Glencross produced their crucial goals.

Jan Hejda brought Columbus within one 6:34 into the third.

The Blue Jackets lost their fourth straight and find themselves seven points out of a playoff position.

Steve Mason took the loss while stopping 24 shots. Columbus was awarded two penalty shots and missed them both.
