Argentina up 2-0 in Davis Cup series

BUENOS AIRES, March 4 (UPI) -- Four-set victories Friday from David Nalbandian and Juan Monaco allowed Argentina to built a 2-0 lead in its best-of-five Davis Cup series against Romania.

Nalbandian topped Adrian Ungur 6-3, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 and Monaco was a 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 winner over Victor Hanescu.

That puts Argentina one win from a quarterfinal appearance against either the Czech Republic or Kazakhstan, which are tied 1-1 in the first-round series.

Argentina can wrap up that quarterfinal slot with a doubles win Saturday by Juan Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank. Romania will try to stave off elimination with the team of Hanescu and Horia Tecau.

Reverse singles matches are scheduled for Sunday with Hanescu again on tap, this time against Nalbandian, while Ungur is to play Monaco.

Nalbandian dropped serve just once in his match Friday. While that cost him the third set, he spread four breaks over the other three sets for the win.

Monaco won two-thirds of the overall points in the final two sets and dropped only 10 points on serve in the third and fourth sets.
