KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Jelena Dokic ousted top-seeded Francesca Schiavone during Monday's first-round play at the BMW Malaysian Open tennis tournament.
Dokic improved to 3-0 lifetime against world No. 5 Schiavone with a 2-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 victory. Dokic had 15 double faults but still managed to win 63 percent of the points on serve and fend off five of six break points she faced in the second and third sets.
Outside of advancing to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, Schiavone hasn't lasted past the second round in any of the five tournaments she's played this year.
Fifth-seeded Lucie Safarova and No 6-seeded Ayumi Morita made the second round with straight-set wins Monday. Morita had six breaks over seven service games from Darya Kustova in a 6-2, 6-0 victory and Safarova topped Zarina Diyas 7-5, 6-1 without facing a break point.
Also Monday, Urszula Radwanska defeated Junri Namigata 6-1, 6-3; Noppawan Lertcheewakarn beat Alberta Brianti 6-4, 2-6, 6-2; and Zhang Shuai claimed a 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4 decision over Chang Kai-chen.
