NHL: Washington 3, New York Islanders 2

UNIONDALE, N.Y., Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Alexander Semin capped a Washington rally Saturday, scoring the go-ahead goal in the third period of the Capitals' 3-2 win over the New York Islanders.

The Islanders led 2-0 midway through the second period when Washington began its comeback. Brook Laich scored 9:44 into frame, and Mike Knuble drew the Caps even at 2-2 with a tally 2 1/2 minutes into the final period.

Then, 5:41 into the third, Semin came into the New York zone on a 2-on-2 rush with Alex Ovechkin, took a pass and fired a wrist shot off the crossbar and into net, handing the Caps a win in the first game of a home-and-home series with the Islanders.

Michal Neuvirth stopped 29-of-31 shots for Washington.

Kyle Okposo and Travis Hamonic scored and Al Montoya made 19 saves in the Islanders' loss.
