RALEIGH, N.C., Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Cam Ward allowed only a second-period goal and made 33 saves Friday in carrying Carolina to a 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh.
The Hurricanes currently own the eighth and final playoff position in the Eastern Conference and took advantage of a struggling Pittsburgh team that lost its fourth in a row.
Carolina scored three times on 11 shots against Marc-Andre Fleury before Fleury was removed in favor of Brent Johnson.
Jay Harrison gave the Hurricanes the lead just 1:44 into the game and Joe Corvo added a power-play tally with 3:17 left in the opening period.
Erik Cole tipped in a shot halfway through the middle period for the Hurricanes before Pittsburgh finally got on the board and Jussi Jokinen tacked on an insurance goal with 5:07 to go in the third.
Pittsburgh's only tally came from Pascal Dupuis.
