ACAPULCO, Mexico, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Julia Goerges became an upset victim Wednesday during the second round of the Abierto Mexicano.
For the second straight tournament, Goerges was defeated in the second round. This time she was ousted by Anabel Media Garrigues 6-4, 7-6 (10-8).
That result leaves the tournament without its top two seeds heading into the quarterfinals. No. 2 seed Polona Hercog was defeated in the opening round by Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
Both the third and fourth seeds made it to the quarterfinals, however.
No. 3 seed Greta Arn survived a difficult match against Renata Voracova for a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory. Fourth-seeded Gisela Dulko advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Silvia Soler Espinosa.
Medina Garrigues will next meet seventh-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro, who was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Madalina Gojnea.
