NHL: Los Angeles 3, Anaheim 2

ANAHEIM, Calif., Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Willie Mitchell scored the tiebreaking goal 6:45 into the third period Wednesday and Los Angeles held on to defeat Anaheim 3-2.

The Los Angeles defenseman scored just his second goal in 34 games this season. He is in his first year with the Kings after having spent the previous decade with four different teams.

Mitchell's slap shot that eluded Curtis McElhinney allowed Los Angeles to halt a two-game skid.

Anaheim never led, but twice tied it after falling a goal behind.

Ryan Smith gave the Kings their first lead midway through the first and Teemu Selanne deadlocked the contest 1:19 later. Selanne's goal was the 626th of his career, moving him past Joe Sakic for 14th place on the NHL's all-time list.

Anze Kopitar again put Los Angeles in front with 2:51 left in the first, but Corey Perry tied it midway through the middle period with his 31st goal of the year.

Jonathan Quick made 25 saves to collect the win. McElhinney allowed the three goals on just 18 shots.
