Arizona storm disrupts spring training

PHOENIX, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- A winter storm blowing through Arizona Sunday played havoc with some Major League Baseball teams' spring training routines.

Baseball practice and other events in the Phoenix and Flagstaff areas were called off due to snow, wind gusts, rain and low temperatures, officials told The Arizona Republic.

Higher elevations of the state were under a winter storm warning until 5 p.m. Sunday, with Flagstaff receiving a foot of snow during the weekend, the newspaper said.

Meanwhile, the Seattle Mariners canceled the team's second full-squad spring workout due to heavy rains Sunday -- a day in which pitchers luckily weren't scheduled to train, Manager Eric Wedge said.

"If there's going to be a day where you can't get out there, it's always good if it's a day you're not throwing anyway," he told MLB.com.

The rains also disrupted the Cleveland Indians' plans to begin further rehabilitation work on left fielder Grady Sizemore, who is attempting to return from last year's knee surgery.

The plans called for outdoor work, but skies cleared late in the afternoon, allowing Sizemore some work, the Web site reported.
