DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Ninth-seeded Shahar Peer posted a straight-set victory Tuesday in first-round play at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
Peer won 61 percent of the points in a 6-4, 6-1 win over Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez. Peer was good on just 53 percent of her first serves but still won 70 percent of the points on serve. She also won more points (29-27) when receiving.
The second set was particularly lopsided, with Peer dropping just 14 points in the seven games.
No. 11-seeded Flavia Pennetta and 12th-seeded Kaia Kanepi joined Peer in the second round with solid wins. Pennetta was on the count just 54 minutes in beating Jelena Dokic 6-2, 6-2. Kanepi topped Vera Dushevina 6-1, 6-2 despite dropping serve twice.
However, 13th-seeded Petra Kvitova fell to Ayumi Morita 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3) and No. 14 Ana Ivanovic was eliminated by Patty Schnyder 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
Anna Chakvetadze claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win over Daniela Hantuchova and earned the right to met top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki in the second round. If Wozniacki reaches the semifinals in Dubai she'll reclaim the world No. 1 ranking from Kim Clijsters.
Other first-round winners Tuesday were Sania Mirza, Yanina Wickmayer, Sara Errani, Zheng Jie, Andrea Petkovic, Tsvetana Pironkova, Peng Shuai, Klara Zakopalova, Jarmila Groth and Roberta Vinci.
