ST. LOUIS, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- John Madden scored the winning goal in the ninth round of a shootout Friday, lifting Minnesota past St. Louis 5-4.

Marvin Havlat tied the score for the Wild with 58 seconds left in the third period and the teams then battled through the marathon shootout until Madden put a backhander past Jaroslav Halak.

Both teams scored twice during the first eight shootout rounds.

St. Louis took a one-goal lead on four occasions only to have Minnesota come back each time.

Cal Clutterbuck scored twice for Minnesota, which has won eight of its last 10 games. David Backes had two goals for the Blues.

Jose Theodore made 31 saves to get the win. Halak stopped 23 shots in what was the sixth loss in eight games for St. Louis.
