No. 1 seed Almagro reaches Brazil quarters

COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- No. 1 seed Nicolas Almagro needed just 70 minutes Wednesday to dispose of Joao Souza and reach the quarterfinals of the Brazil Open.

Almagro, who won this tournament three years ago, was a 6-2, 6-2 winner in the second-round match. He will next take on Rui Machado, who breezed by Filippo Volandri 6-2, 6-1.

All eight second-round matches were played Wednesday and the biggest surprise came when second-seeded Albert Montanes fell to Ricardo Mello 6-3, 6-3. Mello will face Pablo Andujar, another upset winner, in the quarterfinals. Andujar defeated sixth-seeded Tommy Robredo 6-4, 57, 6-2.

In the other second-round matches, third-seeded Thomaz Bellucci won over Carlos Berlocq 6-4, 7-5; No. 4 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov eliminated Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 7-5, 6-4; fifth-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela rallied to down Lukasz Kubot 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 and No. 7 seed Potito Starace outlasted qualifier Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 7-6 (11-9).
