Cardinals name Horton to run defense

PHOENIX, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive backs coach Ray Horton has been hired as Arizona's defensive coordinator, the Cardinals said Wednesday.

Horton, 50, has been with the Steelers for seven seasons, helping mentor them to three Super Bowl appearances, including Sunday's loss to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV.

His accomplishments include helping the Steelers finish in the NFL's Top 10 in total defense each of the last seven years, including six times in the Top 5. The Steelers finished with the best defense three times during the span.

Horton also was a secondary coach for the Detroit Lions (2002-03), and a defensive backs coach for the Cincinnati Bengals (1997-2001).

He played 10 years in the NFL as a defensive back with Cincinnati and the Dallas Cowboys.
