PARIS, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Seeds Kaia Kanepi of Estonia and Czech Petra Kvitova each collected first-round wins Tuesday at the GDF Suez Open indoors event in Paris.
Kanepi, seeded third, advanced to the second round thanks to a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 triumph over Latvian Anastasija Sevastova.
No. 4 seed Kvitova, meanwhile, cruised on the hard courts at Stade Pierre de Coubertin, dispatching Russian qualifier Vesna Manasieva 7-5, 6-4.
Also among the seeded winners Tuesday was No. 8 Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia, who trounced Croatian qualifier Ana Vrljic 6-0, 6-2.
American Melanie Oudin posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Russian Vera Dushevina, and Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic -- last year's runner-up -- fell to Australian qualifier Jelena Dokic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in other first-round action.
