Hanescu falls in Brazil Open upset

COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- No. 8 seed Victor Hanescu was eliminated from the clay-court Brazil Open tournament Monday in an upset at the hands of Italian Filippo Volandri.

Hanescu, of Romania, went down in straight sets to Volandri 7-5, 6-1, at Costa do Sauipe Bahia. The 88th-ranked Volandri held serve to go up 6-5 in the first set and cruised from there, while Hanescu failed to fire a single ace.

Also Monday, Pablo Andujar dispatched Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 6-1, to reach the second round, winning in 77 minutes. The Spaniard now advances to meet the winner of Tuesday's Tommy Robredo-Fabio Fognini matchup.

The top seed at Costa do Sauipe is the event's 2008 winner, Nicolas Almagro, while defending champ Juan Carlos Ferrero isn't participating this year.
