RESTON, Va., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Washington Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth faced simple assault charges Saturday after an alleged road-rage incident.
Fairfax County, Va., police said Haynesworth has been summoned to appear in court on misdemeanor assault charges following a Wednesday incident in Reston, Va., The Washington Post reported.
Authorities said the driver of a pickup and a man in a 1994 Honda Civic became engaged in an altercation. Officer Shelley Broderick told the Post the Civic driver made a "non-verbal hand gesture" because he believed the pickup driver was tailgating him.
Authorities said when both men stopped at a stoplight, the driver of the pickup emerged from his vehicle, had a brief exchange of words and hit the driver of the Civic.
The Civic driver identified himself as Joel Velazques, 38, of Leesburg, Va., to ESPN and claimed it was Haynesworth who punched him in the nose.
Haynesworth's agent told the Post there was no assault and that the allegations were "ridiculous."
