NHL: New Jersey 2, Ottawa 1

NEWARK, N.J., Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Dainius Zubrus scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period Tuesday and the New Jersey Devils used a stifling defense to beat Ottawa 2-1.

Zubrus flipped what appeared to be pass from the right circle that deflected off Ottawa defensemen Chris Phillips and past Robin Lehner into the net, breaking a 1-1 tie less than 6 minutes into the final frame.

Nick Palmieri also scored and the Devils' defense let only 16 shots through to Martin Brodeur, who stopped 15 of them, lifting New Jersey to 7-1-1 in its last nine games.

Alex Kovalev got the only goal for the Senators, who have gone winless in their last seven contests.

Lehner let in two goals on 33 shots.
