Mayer wins third-set tiebreaker in Croatia

ZAGREB, Croatia, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- No. 5-seeded Florian Mayer needed to win a third-set tiebreaker Monday to get out of the first round of the Zagreb Indoors tennis tournament in Croatia.

Mayer saved 5-of-8 break points in defeating local favorite Franco Skugor 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). Mayer was able to finish off just three of his 15 break-point chances with Skugor fighting off 4-of-5 break points in the third set alone.

Ivan Dodig, another Croatian, had little trouble topping sixth-seeded Marcel Granollers, winning 6-3, 6-2 in 66 minutes. Dodig had a pair of breaks in each set and lost only 12 points on serve.

Eighth-seeded Michael Berrer didn't face a break point as he advance to the second round with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Nikola Mektic. Monday's other match saw Lukas Lacko get past Marsel Ilhan 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

The Zagreb Indoors continues through Sunday with the winner collecting $99,000. Top-seeded Marin Cilic is a two-time defending champion of the event.
