Bellucci starts Santiago defense with win

SANTIAGO, Chile, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Defending champ Thomaz Bellucci breezed to a first-round victory over Filippo Volandri Monday at the clay-court Movistar Open in Santiago, Chile.

The third-seeded Bellucci dispatched the Italian 6-2, 6-2, getting off to good start in his effort to repeat at Las Condes.

The Brazilian defeated Argentine Juan Monaco in the final of last year's event. Monaco holds the second seed this year.

No. 6 seed Tommy Robredo of Spain, meanwhile, posted a come-from-behind victory over Frederico Gil of Portugal, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Also claiming wins on the first day were Brazil's Ricardo Mello, Igor Andreev of Russia, and Spaniards Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Pablo Andujar.

Top-seeded David Nalbandian is to play Tuesday against fellow Argentine Carlos Berlocq.
