Mayo blames energy drink for positive test

MEMPHIS, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Memphis Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo Saturday blamed an energy drink for a positive drug test that resulted in a 10-game suspension.

The NBA banned Mayo without pay after the league said he was detected with the steroid cursor dehydroepiandrosterone -- a legal substance but one that violates the NBA's anti-drug policy.

Mayo blamed the positive test on "an energy drink or something similar" that he purchased at a local gas station, The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal reported.

"It was bad judgment on my behalf because I maybe should have gotten it checked out by (the Grizzlies' athletic trainer)," he said. "I can't go too much into it because of the NBA.

"It's not like I went to a GNC and got some kind of muscle armor or something, or ordered some supplement off the Internet or anything. A local gas station got me hemmed up."
