ATLANTA, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A 34-point effort from Joe Johnson helped Atlanta open a big lead Friday and the Hawks held on to defeat New York 111-102.
Johnson added eight rebounds and seven assists in Atlanta's fourth win in six games.
The Hawks were in front by 23 points midway through the third period but New York rallied within five with 3:30 to play. Atlanta limited the Knicks to just three points the rest of the way.
Josh Smith added 24 points and nine rebounds and Al Horford had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Hawks.
New York, which had won its previous two games, got 27 points from Amare Stoudemire.
Johnson came within two points of equaling his largest output of the season. He managed 36 in a two-point win over Sacramento Jan. 17.
