IOWA CITY, Iowa, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Five of the Iowa 13 football players hospitalized due to a workout-related stress reaction have been discharged from the hospital, Coach Kirk Ferentz said.
Ferentz said Friday the school would investigate the matter until it is determined what caused the players to react as they did.
The school had previously said all 13 players had been stricken with rhabdomyolysis, which causes muscle tissue to break down and adversely affects the kidneys.
"I have been communicating with each student-athlete and their parents, or guardians, since learning they were admitted into the hospital," Ferentz said. "I will work with all of the individuals and groups that contribute to the welfare of our student-athletes to understand what led to this occurrence in order to make certain it does not happen again.
"The health of each student-athlete in our football program is paramount."
No further update was given concerning those who remained hospitalized.
"I look forward to the release of the remaining student-athletes in the days ahead," Ferentz said.
