Former skating champs battle at nationals

GREENSBORO, N.C., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Former winner Mirai Nagasu captured the short program Thursday and will take the lead into the free skate portion of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Nagasu, who won the event two years ago and skated 10th out of the 23 competitors, was awarded 63.35 points. Alissa Czisny, the 2009 champion, trailed by just .85 of a point.

Rachael Flatt, who took home the gold medal at this competition last year, was third with 62.32 points.

The title will be determined Saturday.
