LOUISVILLE, Ky., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Peyton Siva scored on a layup with 5 seconds remaining Wednesday to give No. 19 Louisville a 55-54 victory over West Virginia.
The Cardinals trailed by 12 early in the second half but caught up midway through the period and eventually took a six-point lead.
West Virginia then staged its own rally and moved in front at 54-53 on a jumper by Kevin Jones with 39 seconds to play.
Darryl Bryant failed to extend West Virginia's advantage when he missed two free throws with 26 seconds left, giving the Cardinals a chance to pull out the win on their home court.
Siva's driving layup produced the last of his 14 points and Dalton Pepper's missed 3-point try at the buzzer ended West Virginia's last hope.
Chris Smith scored 15 points for Louisville (16-4, 5-2 Big East Conference). The Cardinals have won three out of four.
The Mountaineers (13-6, 4-3) were led by Joe Mazzulla with 18 points.
