Cook rallies for win in Champions opener

PAPAIKOU, Hawaii, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- John Cook overcame a three-shot deficit Sunday, carding an 8-under-par 64 to win the Mitsubishi Electric Championship for his sixth career Champions Tour title.

Cook entered the final round of the tour's season-opening event trailing second-round leader Russ Cochran by three strokes but heated up on the back nine where he shot a 6-under 30 to blow past the field and finish at 22-under 194.

The victory was the second straight for Cook, who closed out the 2010 season by winning the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. It also marked the fourth straight tourney in which his finished in the top five.

Tom Lehman's 8-under 64 was good enough for second place at 20-under 196.

Defending champion Tom Watson, meanwhile, fired a 4-under 68 and finished with sole possession of third at 19-under 197. Cochran stumbled to an even-par 72 and finished tied for fourth with Jeff Sluman (68) at 17-under 199,
