The Sabres twice overcame a one-goal deficit during the first two periods and Vanek put Buffalo in front 5:13 into the third with a wrist shot that eluded Tuukka Rask.

Pominville tipped in a shot by Vanek to give the Sabres a two-goal cushion with 3:20 remaining.

The Sabres, who climbed within six points of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, also got goals from Cody McCormick and Nathan Gerbe.

Boston's lead in the Northeast Division remained three points over idle Montreal.
