Nadal easily moves to Australian 2nd round

MELBOURNE, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, looking for his fourth consecutive Grand Slam title, won all 11 games of his first-round match Tuesday at the Australian Open.

Nadal advanced when Marcos Daniel retired with a knee injury but had built a 6-0, 5-0 lead before the match was stopped. Nadal won 24 of the 26 points off Daniel's serve and had 25 winners. He won 80 percent of the points in the match.

Fourth-seeded Robin Soderling sailed through his first-round match in 94 minutes, taking out Potito Starace 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 without facing a break point. No. 5-seeded Andy Murray was ahead 6-3, 6-1, 4-2 when Karol Beck injured his shoulder and the match was halted. Also, No. 7-seeded David Ferrer advanced with a 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory over Jarkko Nieminen.

Mikhail Youzhny, seeded 10th, defeated Marsel Ilhan 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5); No. 11 Jurgen Melzer ousted Vincent Millot 6-2, 6-4, 6-2, 13th-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga needed five sets to get past Philipp Petzschner 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4; and No. 15 Marin Cilic was a 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 winner over Donald Young.

Benjamin Becker posted an upset of No. 24-seeded Ernests Gulbis, winning 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 6-4.

No. 27-seeded David Nalbandian came out a 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 9-7 winner against Australian Lleyton Hewitt in a match that took nearly four hours and ended after 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Other seeded players moving to the second round were No. 20 John Isner, 21st-seeded Marcos Baghdatis, No. 22 Michael Llodra, 27th-seeded David Nalbandian, 30th-seeded Thomaz Bellucci, 31st-seeded Feliciano Lopez and No. 32 Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
