UNIONDALE, N.Y., Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Vladimir Zharkov and Ilya Kovalchuk scored 27 seconds apart for the New Jersey Devils in the first period Monday, sending the New York Islanders to a 5-2 loss.
Zharkov's goal was the first of his career and Kovalchuk scored in his third straight game as the Devils downed the Islanders for the first time in three tries this season.
The Islanders, who lost for the fourth time in five games, got goals from P.A. Parenteau and Michael Grabner.
Kevin Poulin turned aside 22 shots for New York.
