COL BKB: Stanford 58, Washington 56

STANFORD, Calif., Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Josh Owens gave Stanford the lead with 29 seconds to play Thursday and the Cardinal survived a flurry of late misses to defeat No. 18 Washington 58-56.

The Huskies had a six-game winning streak snapped and lost for the first time this season in Pacific-10 Conference play.

Washington made the trip to Stanford amid speculation involving what Coach Lorenzo Romar said was a police investigation into a member of his team. He declined to say who or what the investigation concerned.

The Huskies led by 10 with 9 minutes to play, but Stanford went on a 12-point run to move in front and Owens scored the last points of the contest with his jumper in the final half minute.

Washington worked the shot clock down to 5 seconds before Scott Suggs attempted and missed a 3-pointer. The Huskies grabbed the rebound and Justin Holiday was fouled with 2 seconds left.

Holiday missed the first foul shot and then, after a time out, missed the second one intentionally in hopes Washington could grab another rebound. Dwight Powell, however, seized the rebound for Stanford.

Powell promptly turned the ball over but Holiday's jumper at the buzzer failed to go.

Owens made 7-of-9 from the field and his 14 points led the Cardinal (10-5, 3-1 Pac-10). Holiday scored 15 for the Huskies.

Washington (12-4, 4-1) became the seventh member of the top 25 ranked teams to lose a game this week, a list that includes three Big Ten Conference teams as well as No. 1 Duke.
