Appleby leads Sony Open

HONOLULU, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- A 6-under 66 by Stuart Appleby Friday gave him a one-shot lead over nine players at the end of the opening round of the Sony Open.

The initial round of the first full-field event on the PGA Tour this season had been postponed from Thursday because of persistent rains that made the Waialae Country Club course unplayable.

The second round will be played Saturday and the concluding 36 holes are scheduled for Sunday. The field will be cut to the low 60 and ties for the final two rounds rather than the usual 70.

Appleby, who ended a four-year victory drought on the tour last year with his ninth career title, did not make a bogey Friday and his round was highlighted by an eagle at the par-4 16th.

The large group tied for second at 65 included Justin Rose, Shigeki Maruyama, Steve Marino and 2010 leading money winner Matt Kuchar.

Jonathan Byrd, who won his final start in 2010 and his first start in 2011 last week at the Tournament of Champions, opened with a 69.

John Daly, having to rely on sponsor's exemptions to compete after not finishing among the top 125 money winners last year, shot a 68. His first 68 last year came in his fourth tournament after he had missed the cut in his first three.
