Rains cause PGA to postpone Sony Open

HONOLULU, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Heavy rains over the island of Oahu Thursday led the PGA Tour to postpone the opening round of the Sony Open in Hawaii.

PGA Tour officials said 2 inches of rain fell Wednesday at the Waialae Country Club, lifting the week's rainfall total to 4 inches.

Rain continued Thursday and organizers delayed the start of play twice before determining the course would be unplayable.

The first round was rescheduled for Friday -- although scattered rain is forecast -- with the second round set for Saturday ahead of a 36-hole finish Sunday.

Ryan Palmer won the Sony Open last year with a birdie on the final hole. He is looking to be the first to repeat as the event's champion since Ernie Els won in 2003-04.
