Gut upends Vonn in women's super-G

ALTENMARK-ZAUCHENSEE, Austria, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Swiss teen Lara Gut upset defending American champ Lindsay Vonn by 0.53 seconds Sunday to claim the women's World Cup super-giant slalom race in Austria.

Gut, 19, finished the tough run on the Kaelberloch course in 1:12.82, barely besting the resurgent Vonn for her second career title.

Vonn won the downhill competition Saturday.

Gut posted the super-G win after overcoming a hip injury that sidelined her during the 2010 Winter Olympics and feud with the Swiss ski federation, who suspended her for two races after she criticized a coach and failed to comply with clothing regulations.

Gut's Swiss teammate Dominique Gisin finished in third place, 0.72 seconds off the mark.

Germany's Maria Riesch, the leader in the World Cup standings, kept the top spot with 932 points and Vonn remained in second place with 827 points.
