Byrd edges Garrigus on 2nd playoff hole

LAHAINA, Hawaii, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Robert Garrigus missed a short par putt on the second playoff hole Sunday, handing Jonathan Byrd a victory at the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.

Garrigus needed only to sink a 3-foot putt to extend the match but it rimmed out for a bogey on the par-5 No. 1.

Byrd had completed a par on the hole, which proved good enough for the win in PGA's first event of the season.

Each golfer had parred the first playoff hole, played on the 18th of the Kapalua Resort-Plantation Course after both finished regulation at 24-under-par 268.

The victory was the second playoff win in as many PGA starts for Byrd, who took last year's Justin Timberlake event in Las Vegas when he aced the fourth playoff hole to best Cameron Percy and Martin Laird.

Graeme McDowell just missed joining the playoff when he matched a course record 11-under 62 but couldn't sink a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 18, instead finishing alone in third place at 23-under 269.

Steve Stricker managed a 2-under 71 to tumble into a fourth-place tie with Carl Pettersson (68) at minus-20.
