Berdych claims lopsided win in India

CHENNAI, India, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Tomas Berdych won 78 percent of the points in posting a first-round victory Tuesday at the Chennai Open tennis tournament in India.

Berdych needed only 45 minutes to dispatch Frederico Gil 6-0, 6-1. He lost four points in his seven service games and took 88 percent of the points on serve and 70 percent off Gil's serve.

Five of the six seeded players on the schedule collected victories, with No. 5 Jeremy Chardy, who fell 6-3, 6-2 to Blaz Kavcic, the exception.

Third-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka parlayed a service break in each set into a 6-4, 6-4 win over Rohan Bopanna and No. 4-seeded Richard Gasquet topped Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-1, 6-3 without facing a break point.

No. 7-seeded Xavier Malisse defeated Marsel Ilhan 6-3, 6-1 and eighth-seeded Robin Haase came from behind in a 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-4 decision over Frank Dancevic.

Alejandro Falla needed five service breaks to fight off Rui Machado 7-5, 6-3 and qualifiers won the other three matches Tuesday, with David Goffin, Yuichi Sugita and Alexandre Kudryavtsev all making the second round.
